Administrative HistoryThe partnership of Thomas Greenall, William Orrett and Thomas Lyon began in August 1786 with the purchase of the brewery at Wilderspool previously operated by Thomas Turner, and was spelled out in the partnership agreement dated 18 March 1788. On Thomas Greenall's death in 1806, his one third share passed to his sons Edward and Peter. After the sale of Orrett's share in 1807, the partnership continued as Lyon and Greenall. When Peter died in 1815, Edward Greenall and Thomas Lyon each had a half share. In 1818, Edward's son Thomas acquired a one sixth share from Thomas Lyon. In 1836, after Edward's death, Peter and Gilbert, Thomas' brothers, joined the business. By 1853, when the partnership of Lyon and Greenall was formally dissolved, two thirds of the business was in the hands of Gilbert Greenall, the remaning one third remaining in the hands of Thomas Lyon . In 1859 Gilbert Greenall became sole proprietor; in 1867 he introduced his nephews, John, William and Peter Whitley into the business. William ceased to be involved from 1869.
Edward Greenall had an interest in Tinsley and Glover, later William Tinsley and Co, distillers, Warrington, from 1801.
From 1810 Lyon and Greenall had a half share in the firm of William Newall and Co, spirit dealers, Knott Mill, Manchester.
