TitleCommissioners in Ecclesiastical Causes
Administrative HistoryAdministrative History
Commissioners appointed by the crown, firstly under 26 Hen. VIII c.1, and under 1 Eliz. c.1, known as the Court of High Commission. Commissions were issued either as general commissions, for each of the provinces, and also for dioceses from time to time. (c.f. Historical Appendix, p.45, of Report of Ecclesiastical Courts Commission, vol.1, 1883).
A feature of the proceedings is the binding over of offenders by recognisance, many of which are signed by them. The jurisdiction appears to be concurrent with the Consistory Court.
