Administrative HistorySt. Mary-on-the-Hill was an ancient parish church, originally serving the townships of Claverton, Little Mollington, Marlston cum Lache, Moston [nr. Chester], part of Upton by Chester, and part of the City of Chester. In 1855 and 1882 areas were transferred to the parishes of Lache cum Saltney and Upton Holy Ascension respectively.

In 1887 the parish of St. Mary of the Hill was abolished, and its area became parts of the Chester parishes of St. Mary Without-the-Walls, St. Olave and St. Bridget. When the latter building closed in 1891, services were held at St. Mary on the Hill instead until it too closed in 1972, becoming part of unified parish for the city of Chester the following year.

The church of St. Mary-without-the-Walls opened in 1887 to serve the Handbridge area of the city of Chester, and part of Marlston cum Lache (formerly in the Chester parishes of St. Mary on the Hill and St. Bridget). For later records see also the parish of Lache cum Saltney.
