Description | Until the 19th century the parish was responsible for local administrative functions that were later taken over by boards of guardians and local authorities. This section includes records of the rates levied to fund these activities and of the officials they appointed: the overseers of the poor, parish constable, surveyor of the highways. Vestry minutes and churchwardens’ accounts recording their appointment, income and expenditure will be found in the ‘Parish Affairs’ section if they survive. |
