Administrative History | Purchased from Charles Brown, silk mercer, mortgagee of the Trustees of the Mechanics' Institution, 1876. This building on the west side of Saint John Street, now the City Library, was originally a private residence, which in 1845 became the home of the Mechanics Institution, founded in Chester by John Broster in 1810. In 1876 the premises were bought by Chester Corporation for conversion into a free library. The building was bounded on the north by the Post Office, and on the south by the Wesleyan Methodist Schools which closed in 1909 |
