Administrative HistoryAdministrative History
Purchased from John Huxley and Joseph Huxley, brewers, 1871.
This property, now demolished, consisted of a house, brewhouse, stable, outbuildings and yard, on the west side of Northgate St., on part of the site now covered by 'The Forum'. It stood between the Town Hall, opened in 1869 and the market, opened in 1862, with the 'Market Inn' adjoining it on the south, and the 'Lord Hill' on the north. The property is first referred to as an inn, the 'Cross Keys', in 1748, but it may have been used for this purpose as early as 1728. Its name was changed to the 'Saracen's Head about 1840
