Administrative HistoryPurchased from Robert Smith, farmer, in 1861.
This coaching inn stood on the west side of Northgate Street between the Fish Market and the Exchange. The best known innkeeper was John Paul, but the property was uninhabited when purchased by the Corporation in 1861 for the purpose of extending the Market. When the Exchange was burnt down the following year, the land was used instead for part of the site of the Town Hall, erected in 1865-1869
