Original minutes of election of Mayor Sir W.W. Wynn, with nos. of votes. 4ff. Note: As Mayor, S. Bennett was involved in an action brought against him by Thomas Griffiths because he had refused sureties for the appearance of Griffiths for an assault. The case was tried at Chester Assizes and a verdict given for Griffiths, who was awarded damages and costs of £300. Bennett determined that the Corporation should pay this sum and that he would have payment before he ceased to be Mayor. As he could not get this, in pique he deserted the Grosvenor party and went over to the opposing group the Egerton faction - Humberston, Dicas, Roberts etc., who agreed to pay the £300. He refused to participate in the making of Sir W.W. Wynn Mayor, but, in revenge, held popular elections for Mayor and Assembly. William Seller seems to have been chosen as rival Mayor. d April, 1827.
