Descriptiona n.d. Watermark 1820. Copy of Quo Warranto, proceedings of 1499 by Prince Arthur, Earl of Chester, v. the Mayor and Citizens. 20ff. b 1786. Certified copy of warrant for a charter to be given to Chester in 1854. Includes summary of charter. 8ff. c 1784-87. Certified copies of Quo Warranto proceedings of 1683-4, Rex v. Mayor and Citizens. 1n. and 26ff. d Copy of letter, dated 30th October 1784, from Thomas Brock ? a solicitor at Chester to the Hon. Thomas Grosvenor, Esq: concerning the Mayor's election and the demand by the opposite party for an election of all the body corporate, according to the charter of Henry VII. Asks him to take the earliest opportunity of getting a consultation with Mr. Eower and the Attorney General. Assures him that the existence of the present corporation and the maintenance of the Grosvenor family's interest are at stake, as the opposing party intend to file informations against the Mayor and some of the Aldermen anc Councilmen to show by what right they hold their offices. Relates that in 1734 long litigations were had at vast expenses to Eaton, concerning the Mayor and Aldermen, in whose favour verdicts were then obtained; 'but at this day according to some modern determination the doubts to be feared would be after verdicts, supposing they were obtained in behalf of the Corporation.' They must consider whether an Act of Parliament can be obtained to enable the King to grant a new charter to establish the body corporate and their ancient wages. Tells him that his countenance is necessary not only to show protection to the Corporation, but to preserve the Eaton interest and save himself much greater future expense. He is preparing the case of the Corporation for counsel to consider, and will transmit it to him. Thinks a subscription might be proposed and headed by Grosvenor. 3 ff. e 1786. Attested copy of warrant of 19th October 1888, from James II to the Attorney or Solicitor General for the re-incorporation of the Mayor and Citizens of Chester, as they were incorporated before the judgement was obtained against them in the Quo Warranto by Charles II, and for restoring their former franchises. 2 ff. f 1786 Extracts from records of the Signet Office, 1688-9, concerning the above restitution. 1f. d, e, and f were found among the miscellaneous debris in the site strongroom and added here
