On 12th January, 1810, George Taylor,labourer, Alexander McGregor, labourer, John Evans, labourer, and others riotously assembled in the streets of the City, assaulted Thomas Norris and broke down three doors of the theatre. 2ff. b.&c. Brief for the defendants, including copies of court order and affidavits. The song 'The Glorious sixth of May' was composed to commemorate John Egerton's election as M.P. in 1807. It was sung at the theatre on 3rd January, when a 'hired mob from Eaton' acting in the Grosvenor interest caused a riot. It was to be sung at a second concert on 12th January, when a more serious riot took place between the supporters of Egerton and those of Grosvenor. The theatre doors were broken down before the performance. Note: George Taylor keeps the Grosvnor Arms Inn at Eccleston and is Clerk to Mr. Whitbym head steward to Earl Grosvenor.
