Description | This collection of legal papers relates to cases concerning the laws, customs and privileges of the city and the cases in which Chester Corporation was a party. The collection comprises a group of suits which relate to the method of election of the governing body, mainly to quo warranto proceedings, 1732-1829; a group of suits concerning St John's Hospital, 1827-53; and a general series of suits. The general series includes papers concerning controversies over the jurisdiction of the city and palatinate courts, 1558-84; the liberty of Gloverstone, 1624-28 and 1758; the right of citizens to put cattle on Hoole Heath, 1652-55; a riot in Chester, 1733; trade by non freemen, 1758-64 and 1823-26; the charities of Owen Jones, Valentine Broughton and John Vernon, 1653-1811; the Chester election, 1820; and the Rating and Valuation Act, 1925. Case relating to use of water in River Dee by tobacco mills in light of development of hydroelectric station in 1927. Includes apparently unrelated plan and elevation of proposed stage in connection with Midland, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway bridge over River Dee. |
