TitleReview of bye-laws; collection of fines; audit; appointments of warders of the poor stock and House of Correction; selling of ale
Date27 Nov 1579
DescriptionA committee appointed, to review and report on the bye-laws of the City.
Former orders concerning the collecting of fines are rehearsed; it is emphasised that the reluctance of the Sheriffs to do their duty in this respect, is due to the unprofitable nature of the task. (ZA/B/1/178v) Therefore the present Sheriffs are to collect and enjoy the fines without accounting, on condition that they make the usual payments, plus £10 to the Treasurers, and that they have no power to mitigate fines.
(ZA/B/1/179). All Mayors, Sheriffs, Treasurers, Leevelookers and others, who have held office since the last mayoralty of Henry Hardware [1575], to present their accounts to a new body of auditors. Those in arrears are to be imprisoned until payment is made.
The Leevelookers to pay 20/- a year to the person appointed to keep the chimes of St. Peter's "in good tune".
Appointment of Randle Leeche, merchant, and William Mutton, goldsmith, as Warders of the poor stock and House of Correction.
Ale to be sold by the London can; a former order forbidding the frequenting of ale houses by certain persons, to be enforced.
