TitleAssessment for the payment of soldiers; lease

DescriptionIt was ordered that an assessment of £12 a week should be assessed and levied upon the Citizens and inhabitants for the payment of a guard of soldiers for the defence of the City; viz: thirty men for every day and night, to continue as long as the Mayor and the Deputy Lieutenants for the County of the City should think meet. Six assessors were appointed. The Constables were to collect the assessment and to pay it to the Mayor; in case of refusal to pay they were empowered to distrain.
Thomas Ashton, innholder, was granted a lease for three lives and twenty-one years of a parcel of waste ground at Cowlane end, on which he had built a barn, at a yearly rent of 5s.
