Description | Mr. Robert Caddick was elected Councilman in place of Simon Lea, deceased, took the oath and subscribed the declaration and took the oath of a Councilman. The Mayor moved that speedy course be taken for sueing for the renewing or confirming of the City's Charter and for election of fit persons to go to London to solicit the same, and how the money should be raised for that purpose. The business might not longer be deferred without great danger to the Corporation. It was ordered that £100 should be levied on all the free citizens and that the Mayor and two or more Aldermen and Justices of the Peace should nominate two of the Councilmen or two freemen in every ward to make the assessment. The sum was to be collected by the constable and be paid to Richard Levinge and William Crompton. The Assembly desired the Recorder and Alderman Crompton to travel to London to effect the business, assuring their expenses. If the £100 was insufficient further sums should be levied. Upon the petition of Thomas Baker, gentleman, Postmaster for the City, and at the request of the Lord Chief Justice of Chester, Sir Henry Bennett, one of his Majesty's Secretaries, and other persons of quality, he was elected a freeman, paying £30. Upon the petition of Nathaniel Berrington, it was ordered that he might hold the messuage and tenement at Watfold pavement, belonging to the City, for one year and then yearly during pleasure, giving security. Randle Hind, who holds the house, his tenure being ended, shall leave the premises according to former warning or his bond shall be put in suit. The petition of Jonathan Ridge, draper, desiring to be indemnified concerning certain suits against him for stone (which he alleged for the City's use) was read and debated but, as nothing was concluded, was laid aside. Liberty was granted for the railing in of the piece of ground on the Roodee formerly used as a bowling green. It was to be used for that purpose and Alderman William Street and Mr. Valentine Short were to receive money as contributions and dispose of the same for that work. |
