DescriptionAlthough the writer is not named, references to Nantwich, his brother James, and Corporation business indicate that the writer was Roger Comberbach, son of James Comberbach, a tanner of Nantwich Roger Comberbach was Clerk of the Pentice or Town Clerk from 1688 to 1700, and Recorder of Chester from 1700-1719. Roger Comberbach was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, and admitted to the Inner Temple in 1696. In addition to his Chester appointments, he was later judge for the counties of Caernarvon, Anglesea [Anglesey] and Merioneth.. The volume includes a receipt signed by Robert Billinges acknowledging the receipt of money from `R. Comberbach', 28 July 1692 [see f.33v], and a memorandum, 25 Aug 1690 `I pd. Mr. Billinge (at Nanptwch) in full of all arrears of rent...' There is also a memorandum of payment to Mr. Billinge, 23 Nov 1691 [see f. 34-r].

Physical DescriptionThis item is a small manuscript volume, 7" × 3", written on paper, with a cardboard cover bound in parchment, and a metal clasp. The volume is mainly written in English although some sections, no doubt considered confidential by the writer, are in Latin.
