Administrative History | These schools developed from a Methodist Sunday school established at the Octagon Chapel, near the present City Road, in 1782. After the congregation moved from the Octagon Chapel to the new chapel in St. John Street c.1810 the girls' Sunday school moved to St. John Street and the boys' to Back Brook Street; day schools were established c.1839, the girls being accommodated in the Sunday School premises and the boys in Brook Street. In 1842, the two schools were united at St. John Street. A separate infant school was established in Pepper Street in 1871 and moved in 1899 to premises in City Road, which were probably beneath the Wesleyan Chapel adjoining Leadworks Lane. The Boys' school was reorganised as a Higher Grade School in 1886. All the schools were closed in 1909. Most of the infants transferred to Egerton Street Council Infant School, opened in January 1910, and the older pupils to Love Street School which opened in June 1909. [see ZD/ES/4]. |
