Administrative History | The Royal Lancastrian Society was formed in 1810 to promote schools based on the monitorial system as developed by William Lancaster. The name was changed in 1814 to the British and Foreign School Society. It was sponsored and supported by those in favour of non-sectarian religious education. This local branch of the British and Foreign School Society was established in 1867 to support non sectarian religious education. Schooling was first given in leased premises in Windmill Lane until Victoria Road British School opened in 1871. This was followed by a short-lived Infants' school in Commonhall Street, 1875-76, then by Boughton British Infants' School started in 1880 |
