Administrative History | Under the Police Act of 19 and 20 Victoria, cap. 69, 1856, a statistical report had to be made annually to the Secretary of State for Home Affairs. There is a reference to such a report in the Watch Committee minutes on 23 Oct. 1856 and these minutes also contain some very abbreviated statistics from 1857 to 1861. G.L. Fenwick was appointed as Chief Constable on 1 Sept. 1864 and on 19 Oct. 1865 an order was made for 100 printed copies of his first Annual report. This volume begins with his fourth report for the year ending 29 Sept. 1868. Up to 1892 these reports ran from Michaelmas to Michaelmas, but following the Police Returns Act of 1892, from 1893 the reports begin in January each year and contain additional information. |
