TitleTown Hall Plans
Date1865-1949
DescriptionThis collection comprises plans of the building of the Town Hall, the restoration of the Council Chamber and other later alterations.
Administrative history: After the Exchange burnt down in 1862, the City Council needed a new civic building. A competition was held to choose the design for the building. Architect W H Lynn's design was chosen and builders Clark and Sons won the tender to erect the building. The foundation stone was laid on 25th October 1864 but due to various problems the building was not completed and opened until 15 October 1869. Further problems beset the building when in March 1897 the Council Chamber was gutted by fire and was restored in 1898 by the Chester Architect T M Lockwood.
