Administrative History | The Historical Manuscripts Commission, established in 1869, was invited to inspect Chester's records in 1878 and a report was made by J. C. Jeaffreson in 1881. Following the work undertaken by Charles Lamacraft of the British Museum between 1932 and 1941, Mr D. L. Evans of the Public Record Office visited Chester and surveyed the records in 1948. His report recommended the appointment of an archivist and Miss M. J. Groombridge was appointed the same year. From 1948, the Chester City Record Office was responsible for the preservation of the records of the City Council and its predecessors, for public records of a local nature and for records deposited with it. |
