| Description | The office of town clerk had existed in Chester since at least 1394, but its functions were confirmed by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835: in particular, the town clerk was responsible for the legal business of the city and for keeping the city's records. A separate clerk of the peace was usually appointed to administer quarter sessions business. After 1974, the functions of the office were transferred to the new post of Clerk and Chief Executive. The records comprise registers of prosecutions conducted at petty sessions, quarter sessions and assizes; letters and papers; committee papers; schemes for the administration of the city's charities; a bundle of papers relating to the Chester Junction Railway; and unlisted material relating to civic and administrative functions. |
