Administrative History | Sealand House, built in 1899, was originally the County Borough Isolation Hospital. The re-organisation of hospital and public assistance services in Chester in accordance with the National Assistance Act, 1948, included the closure of the Isolation Hospital on 31 Mar 1947 and the transfer of the hospital by the Public Health Committee to the Public Assistance Committee on 1 July 1947 in exchange for the public assistance institution, St. James' House, Hoole. In 1948, the inmates of St. James' House were transferred to the former hospital, henceforth known as Sealand House. The building was run by the City's Welfare Committee, appointed in June 1948. As a result of local government re-organisation in 1974, Cheshire County Council took over the administration of social services throughout the county and Sealand House was transferred to County Council management. |
