| Description | Section DCN/W of the Chambers & Co. collection represents the records originally stored in 3 lockers that formed part of a deposit to Cheshire Archives during an attic clearance from their premises in Northwich during the 1970s. Chambers & Co. (now Chambers and Fletcher) have provided legal advice to clients throughout Cheshire for over 200 years. The material within DCN/W represents the legal advice provided to the Weaver Navigation Trustees and the British Transport Commission by Chambers & Co. concerning the inland waterways of Cheshire, and in particular the Weaver Navigation. The Weaver Navigation Trustees became centralised under the Docks and Inland Waterways Executive for the British Transport Commission in late 1947. Chambers & Co. continued to provide a legal service to the British Transport Commission relating to the Weaver Navigation and other inland waterways, but also covered areas outside of Cheshire as instructed by the British Transport Commission (this is represented in DCN/W/6). A box list was compiled prior to its deposit with Cheshire Archives, listing each file stored within the lockers. The records within this section include records relating to the Weaver Navigation Trustees, which includes meeting minutes and documentation relating to employees (DCN/W/1). There are also records relating to the management of land along the Weaver Navigation and other inland waterways in Cheshire, including records relating to the processes of purchasing and leasing land (DCN/W/2). There are further records relating to the creation of legal documents such as agreements, claims and licences, as well as correspondence concerning legal advice for both the Weaver Navigation Trustees and the British Transport Commission (DCN/W/3). There are records relating to the maintenance of the Weaver Navigation and inland waterways in Cheshire and also correspondence concerning incidents that occurred to its infrastructure (DCN/W/4). There are various copies of relevant bills and acts kept by Chambers and Co. (DCN/W/5) and there are also records and correspondence relating to the legal advice provided by Chambers and Co. concerning inland waterways outside of Cheshire (DCN/W/6). |
