Administrative HistorySir John Radcliffe was Lord of the Manor of Sandbach. The Lordship, together with rights to the market etc, were later sold to the family of Crewe. Lord Crewe presented the market rights to the town in 1889 (Kelly's Directory of Cheshire, 1928, p341). The rights then passed to Sandbach Urban District Council in 1894 and subequently to Congleton Borough Council in 1974.
