TitleSurvey of estates by John Probert
Datec1760-1763
DescriptionThe survey comprises 16 maps in this collection and a further 2 catalogued under the reference D 7374. The maps cover the whole or parts of the following townships: Lea; Walgherton; Hunsterson; Bridgemere; Checkley; Blakenhall; Chorlton; Weston; Basford; Rope; Hatherton; Batherton; Buerton; Minshull Vernon; Church Coppenhall; Monks Coppenhall; Stapeley (all DDB/Q 1); and Doddington and Broughton in Staffordshire (in D 7374) . For the survey book and valuation which accompanies these maps (with the exception of Broughton) see D 7383/1
Administrative HistorySir Brian Broughton-Delves, 5th Baronet, was born in 1740. He succeeded to the baronetcy at the age of 4, on the death of his father, the 4th Baronet, also called Sir Brian Broughton-Delves, on 11 August 1744. The 4th baronet had succeeded to the estates of his grandfather Sir Thomas Delves, who died in 1725, and had added the name Delves. It is possible that that the survey was commissioned as the 5th baronet came of age and took responsibility for his estates. Sir Brian was also active in consolidating his estates by purchases and exchanges in 1761-3 (see DDB/Q 1/3,4)
Related MaterialThe key to the field references in the Broughton map was "A Survey and Valuation of the Several Estates of Sir Brian Broughton Delves, Bart., lying within the townships or hamlets of Broughton, Croxton, Asshley, Shelton, Whitmore, Sugnall, Pershall, Three Farms, Tunstall, Old Lea, Kemsey, Droynton, Bagnall and Bemersley, in the Hundred of Pyre-Hill and County of Stafford. Made Anno Dom. 1760, by his most Obedient Servant J Probert" which was at Doddington in 1908 (see Records of an Old Cheshire Family by Sir Delves Louis Broughton
