Marriage contract; covenants in which the parties are to be bound in £400 by Obligation (Recognisance) to bear even date with these, in respect of a marriage to be made between Lawrence Downes son of Roger Downes and Elizabeth Legh sister of Peres Legh before next Christmas; covenant by party 2 in consideration of £226. 13. 4. to be paid under Bond by party 1, to create before Christmas 1552 an estate in his chief or capital messuages of Worthe [Worth] and Shrygeley [Pott Shrigley] in the county of Chestr' [Chester] and the lands etc. appurtenant, as a jointure, whereof is to be settled upon the wife an estate of the annual value of £8. 4. 4. for life, remainder Lawrence and his issue, thence Dorothy, Katherine, Sybill, Margaret, Elizabeth, Pernell, Ellen, and Margery daughters of Roger Downes and their issue, thence to the right heirs of Lawrence Downes, or, in case Lawrence Downes should die in the lifetime of Roger Downes Elizabeth his wife to be settled in an estate worth 35s. 8d. for her life, remainders as before, with assurance that the whole should descend on Roger's death to Lawrence his son, with reservations - the dowers mentioned above and that of Roger's wife Ellen value £20 and an estate of 35s. 6d. made over for life to Lawrence Downes uncle of Roger Downes and another of 30s. for life held by Thomas Downes uncle of Roger Downes and one of 32s. 8d. for life made over to Richard Downes uncle of Roger Downes, and one of 20s. for life held by Humfryd Blackshaghe and an annuity of £6. 13. 4. granted to Robert Downes for life and a reversion in the whole estate value £10 which is to be granted in trust to Roger's executors after his death for the provision of portions for Roger's daughters Sybyll, Merget, Elizabeth, Pernell, Elyn and Margerie to be held by them until such time as they have raised 240 marks for this purpose, and an estate of 20 marks for 12 years for the executors of Roger's Will; all of which estates remainder to Lawrence Downes etc. as afsd.
