| Description | Depositions taken at an examination before 'the said' John Davenport Esq., J.P. and of Quorum, 'touching the makeing & repaireing a Bridge over the water in a Lane neare Poynton Mill in Poynton called Stanley Lane'
Richard Hepson of Worth, husbandman, age 40 years and more, knew Poynton Mill in Poynton and a lane in Poynton called Stanley Lane, and a Horse Bridge near the said Mill in the said lane, and also a messuage near that lane and a mill called the Mill Hill Tenement formerly held by John Stanley dcsd, now held by Roger Worthington. He did not know who was responsible for repairing the bridge, though he was a servant of the successive owners of Mill Hill tenement for 33 years, and knew that they had to repair their part of the lane and keep a "yate" at the end of it nearest Richard Ashcrofts. He signs with his mark an "R".
Raphe Wood of Worth in the county of Chester, yeoman, age 72 years, says his mother was a daughter of Edward Stanley, and sister to John Stanley, both formerly simultaneous owners of Mill Hill tenement in Poynton, and says that when he was a boy in service to his grandfather and uncle there, he and others were employed to repair the lane and the bridge and the rail of the bridge, and he never knew the other inhabitants of Poynton or Worth have anything to do with this work, but the owners of the tenement maintain the bridge by tenure of an encroachment to the south of the lane belonging to the township, and he says that he personally 5 or 6 years ago refused to do more than a day-work at the mending of the bridge (he took his team to lead stone to it) because the owners of the tenement ought to have been at it. Mary Barton of Poynton, co.Chester, spinster, age 26, says that 14 years ago Anne Barton her mother, daughter of John Stanley of Mill Hill in Poynton, then a widow, owned part of Mill Hill Tenement, and was called on by some of the inhabitants of Poynton to repair the bridge in Stanley Lane near the Mill in Poynton called Poynton Bridge (which had then been damaged in a flood), and Anne Barton then had this done as belonging to her right of the said Mill Hill tenement, which is now in Mr. Roger Worthington's tenement. William Bate the elder of Poynton, co. Chester, husbandman, age 67 years or more, lived a quarter of a year at Mill Hill when Raphe Wod lived there, and remembers the bridge being mended three times during his memory, but doesn't know that Stanley, formerly owner of Mill Hill tenement, did any more towards it than the other inhabitants of Poynton usually did.
