Sacred to the Memory of/Edwd. Downes Esqr. MA./Member of the University of Oxford/The last male Branch of a line of Ancestors/who had held the Manor of Shrigley/And various Estates in the neighbouring Townships during the long period/ of Six Centuries./ One of the Magistrates & Deputy Lieutenants of/The County of Chester/Thro' Life he was a warm Admirer of/ The Constitution of his Country/ And a faithful & zealous adherent to/ The established Church/ His elegant classical attainments, Urbanity of Manners,/ & sound Judgement, endear'd him to a Circle of/ respectable Friends, who will long revere his Memory/ While his active Benevolence & unaffected Piety/ will be long remembered by the neighbouring Poor/ To whom he was at once a Benefactor & an Example/ His chief Aim was to/ Do Justice, Love Mercy, & walk humbly with his God./ Full of religious Hope/ and in calm tranquillity he departed this Life/ lamented and respected/ 30 December A D 1819 Anno Etatis 51
