Transcript;-

Sacred to the Memory/ of/ Edward Downes Esqr. M.A./ One of the Magistrates and a Deputy Lieutenant/ For this County/ The last Male Branch of an ancient/ and respectable Family; from which this Chapel derives its Name and foundation/.

Through Life he was a warm Admirer/ Of the excellent Constitution of his Country;/A Faithful & Zealous Adherent/To our Venerable established Church;/And his daily Conduct evinced to all,/ who had the happiness of knowing him,/ That his Character was formed upon the Basis/ of genuine benevolence to Mankind/ and of unfeigned Piety to God./ In a cheerful serenity of Mind/ And with gratitude to the Author of every blessing/ He departed this Life/ lamented and respected/ On the 30th. day of December 1819/ In the 51st. Year of His Age.
