Description [Hastily pencilled note, later clearly transcribed, reporting the Battle of the Alma]. "One line from the field of battle to tell you that I have escaped at present with only one slight wound in the ankle, nothing to signify. The first Brigade of the Light Division, 7th, 24th & 33rd, did the work, we carried by storm a place considered impregnable in 3 hours. The carnage has been fearul. We have lost, killed & wounded in our regiment, 10 officers, & 290 men, almost cut to pieces. The shot & shell was dreadful. The men behaved beautifully. Poor Monk & Hare, I am afraid are dead."
