DescriptionConfused state of the fighting. "I do not know whether you know the game of chess, if so this is the most complete game I ever saw. We literally fight for every inch of ground and woe betide the player that makes a false move." Bombardment not making much impression on the Russians - our losses "now some 30 men daily." Railway is finished "up to our Division, but is useless for want of hordes." French and Sardinians had fought Russians on the Tchernaya day previously - 2000 Russians were left dead on the field and about twice that number wounded." "Many officers have gone home and this all tempts me much to follow the lead, but I hope this year's campaign is such that leave will be granted to those who were here last winter without asking for it."
