| Description | From 1561, the rolls of the mayors' portmote court and the sheriffs' pentice court were filed together. Some rolls of proceedings at quarter sessions are also included. Very few portmote court proceedings are filed after 1743 and actions in the portmote court in the nineteenth century appear to have originated in the exchequer of pleas. After the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835, both portmote and pentice were held before the recorder. Most of the general court rolls were repaired in the 1930s, but a few are still on their original files. There are gaps in the series. |
