Administrative HistoryThe office of treasurer existed long before the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835, (see TREASURERS), but the Treasurer's Department developed in the nineteenth century. The treasurer appointed by the Council after 1835 was responsible for the financial management of the city, including city funds, such as the borough, lamp and improvement funds and the accounts of various committees.
