DescriptionThis Sunday School began 25 Aug. 1839 with Mr. M. Harrison, silk mercer and Mr. G. Haswell, mason as teachers. Separate classes for women were begun on 29 Sept. 1839 with Mrs. Frith as teacher. The names of the teachers are given at the end of each meeting. At the end of volume. there is a register of male prisoners attending classes for spelling and reading listed under headings: No., name, age, state of education, conduct and observations, with a note by William Manley that the classes began on 3 June 1844. Also reports by William Manley dated 31 Dec. 1844 and Aug. 1845 that the school was open daily but that the older men were unwilling to attend or reveal openly their lack of schooling. Also includes lists of prisoners' property 1847-9.
