DescriptionAn account of public money was kept by the treasurer of the public stock, who was usually the town clerk. Income derived from a local rate, authorised by quarter sessions, which was generally levied annually and varied between £100 and £800 in the 1830s. Expenditure included the wages of servants and officials; costs of conveyance of military baggage and of paupers and prisoners; supplies to the house of correction; and prosecution expenses.
