Description | Contains a mixture of indictments and recognizances. Entries are extremely detailed. Brief notes of the same entries can also be found in the sessions books (QJB) Comparison of a few sample entries with QJB 2/3 eg. QJX 2/1/1: See QJB 2/3 f.42v, QJX 2/1/9: See QJB 2/3 f.21v (Middlewich) and f.23r (Nantwich), QJX 2/1/10: See QJB 2/3 f.22v-25v, QJX 2/1/11: See QJB 2/3 f.19v. In each case there are only a few entries in QJX compared with a lot more in QJB. However the names appearing in QJX could be identified in QJB. Entries extremely detailed in QJX but very brief in QJB. Difficult to assess why these particular cases are here in QJX - though significance could emerge if studied in more detail together with QJB. At a glance the cases seem fairly miscellaneous. Indictments vary in style:- (i) Some introduced "Inquest held" with names of jurors "who say under oath that ...." with subsequent cases merely beginning "Et quod" (see QJX/2/1-5,7) (ii) Others are actually headed "Indictments" and just begin "Jur pres ....." with no names of jurors (see QJX/2/6,10) (iii) Some headed "Placita" and begin "Jur pres ...." with no names of jurors (see QJX/2/8,9) (iv) Note that doc QJX/2/11 is not actually headed "Indictments" but is same as documents QJX/2/6 and 10 Recognizances vary in style:- (i) Rolls of recogs at General Quarter Sessions (see QJX/2/12,14) (ii) "Apud Norton" (see QJX/2/13) Is this a private sessions or monthly meeting - or more likely just a JP acting from his own home? (iii) Alehouse recogs written out in full but as single entries (see QJX/2/15-18, 20-28) One doc does not seem to fit in viz: 19 (Jury Presentment 1584) |
