Description | Estreats of fines contain the names of persons from whom the amercements were due with brief details of the cases, the names of the pledges and the amount due. They are sometimes arranged under streets and occasionally, in the earlier rolls, totals are given. The amercements appear to relate to cases in the pentice court, but there is one reference each to the crownmote and portmote courts (see SRE/2). In two fourteenth century rolls, lists are headed 'Alewyte' but the meaning of this is not known. There is some evidence that a roll containing estreats of fines may have been kept by each sheriff |
